Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Rajmata Jijau Maa Saheb laid the foundational roots of the city. The Peshwas also made invaluable contributions to Pune's development. After the end of the Peshwa Empire in 1818, the British took control of Pune and its surrounding areas. Following the establishment of the Municipal Council in 1858, civic infrastructure began taking shape in the city. Later, in 1950, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) was formed in this city, which is widely known for its rich historical and cultural heritage. In the years that followed—especially after the devastating Panshet flood of 1962—the Municipal Corporation did an excellent and beautiful job of rebuilding and restoring the city. Over the next few years, the corporation rapidly developed the city, ensuring the supply of essential services like water, roads, electricity, primary health, and education, all while preserving Pune's historical heritage. To promote tourism in the city, the Heritage Management Department was established. This department has successfully undertaken and completed several important projects, and a comprehensive list of historical sites in the city has also been prepared.
